For your daily shopping you will find most of what you need in St.-Gervais d'Auvergne, at 5 km: a small supermarket, a grocery store, post office, bank, news agent, gas station, restaurants, a general store, a pharmacy, doctors... There is also a recreation lake for swimming and fishing (Etang Philippe). For a large supermarket (Super U) you need to cross the Sioule river to Les Ancizes/St.-Georges de Mons, at 14 km. Chateauneuf-les-Bains, at 13 km, has France's smallest thermal bath as well as several restaurants, and an outdoor sports centre where you can rent a canoe, or go rock climbing. There are several places nearby where you can go horse riding, and the Sioule river is one of the country's highest rated areas for fly fishing. You can also fish for trout in one of the many small lakes. For watersports like waterskiing and windsurfing or a swim at the beach it is only minutes to the reservoir lake of Fades-Besserve Just put your boots on and start hiking right from our doorstep - there are wonderful trails everywhere. The same goes for mountain biking. Don't miss the trail to the Cascade de Gour Saillant, a beautiful waterfall at easy hiking distance from Le Ballon Bleu. Sights to see are the Viaduc des Fades (3 km), which is the world's highest railway viaduct with masonry pylons, built in 1905; the Meandre de Qoeuille, for a fantastic sight over the winding Sioule river; the view from the Chateau Rocher (also great for a picknick); the Vulcania attraction park at 35 minutes (or the 'Volcan Ouvert' just opposite); the summit of the puy de Dôme and its view of over an hundred large and small volcanoes - the nearest one being the Gour de Tazenat, a crater lake where you can swim and ride water bikes, at about 20 minutes. You can also just go outside on a clear night and admire the starry spectacle of the Milky Way. Above all, you will be able to enjoy piece and quiet. |
